What's New?
CineMaster 2000 will work with your computer's TV tuner card or analog video input (e.g.: camcorder) to provide digital video recording (DVR). CineMaster DVR uses high-quality MPEG2 compression to record up to two hours of video programming directly to your hard disk for later review.
In addition, CineMaster's DVR provides Time Shifting capability. Time Shifting allows you to pause a program you're currently watching. While paused, the program continues to record to hard disk. You can choose to resume watching from the moment of the pause, or to rewind - all the way back to the earliest recorded moment - and review the program from the beginning.

This version of CineMaster includes the ability to play many common types of media files you may have on your PC or download from the internet.

An increasing number of DVD titles are being mastered with DTS digital surround sound.  While the CineMaster DVD Player does not decode DTS audio, it now allows DTS to be passed to external decoders via SPDIF enabled sound cards.

How to upgrade Cinemaster 1.03j to Cinemaster 1.6
Here's how I got it to work......

Ok, first I DL'd the program file from Oleg's (thanks, dude!) and then I went to Cinemaster's site and got the win98 upgrade (2 files: Disk 1 of 2 for DVD Player for CineMaster 1.2 and Disk 2 of 2 for DVD Player for CineMaster 1.2 for Windows 98.)(I have win98 and DX6). I installed the first one (Cinemaster 1.03j) from Oleg's page, and then the upgrade from Cinemaster's site over it. I then set the ATI control in the control panel to "Full CPU"("Base CPU" in some cases) and then HAD TO drop the desktop to 16bit color. At 32 bit color, it stated that there was "no overlay", but at 16bit color, it worked fine. I guess the desktop res and color plays a part here. Good luck, friends........

Installing Software CineMaster the right way.
Software CineMaster is at this time the best Software-only DVD Player on the market today. It is the most configurable, it can be set to multi-region quite easily, it has the lowest CPU consumption and it supports Hardware Motion Compensation.
In fact, ATI dumped Zoran's SoftDVD in favor of CineMaster's software solution because CineMaster offered a much better decoding engine.
And here the problems start. There are a multitude of CineMaster versions. Some are complete packages (Decoding Engine+Player), some are partial packages (Player only) and some are Licensed packages (ATI DVD Player 1.2).
You would think that one package would suffice to get the best out of Software CineMaster, but this is not the case. In reality, to get the most updated Software CineMaster Player/Engine/Control Panel. You in fact need three separate packages.
I will first list the problems of each separate package, and then i will explain how you can get the best CineMaster setup by combining all three.

Software CineMaster v1.03j :
Older player.
Older engine (Low volume sound on some DVD Titles).

CineMaster Player v1.6 :
Doesn't contain a decoding engine or control panel.

ATI Player v1.2 :
Control Panel is hidden from user!
Unstable Customized ATI Playing interface.

Now, here is how you get the best out of your Software CineMaster:
Uninstall all previous CineMaster/ATI DVD Player versions, you will want a clean install.
Install Software CineMaster v1.03j.
Copy the control panel file (qiswcine.cpl from the windows "system" directory) into a temporary directory.
Uninstall Software CineMaster v1.03j.
Install the ATI DVD Player v1.2.
Copy over the control panel file (qiswcine.cpl) from the temporary directory into the windows "system" directory. You may want to backup the existing file (The one installed by the ATI DVD Player), but this is just a precaution.
Install the CineMaster Player v1.6.
By applying this setup, you should solve several CineMaster related problems, mainly the "I get low volume when playing certain DVD titles" problem and the "I don't see the CineMaster setting in the windows Control Panel" problem.
And ofcourse, it's always good to have the latest version installed.

This page is mostly devoted to those with SCSI DVD players who cannot use PowerDVD, but anyone who would like to try an alternative read on.   First I have to thank the people who led me to this end.  I read a post on alt.video.dvd.software by Quadrophonic and replied to by Steddy Man.  The QI Cinemaster software decoder I will descirbe how to install here is the only one I have found thus far that functions with the Pioneer DVD-U02 (302) DVD-ROM drive.  It will most likely work with other SCSI DVD players as well.

First download Disk 1 and 2 of the Cinemaster Player from QI 1, 2 or me 1, 2
Next download some extra files you will need in a patch set I have compiled - Patch.  These files were pulled out of the ATI distribution.
Unzip Disk 1 and 2 and install using Setup.
Lastly extract the QIPatch.zip into your \windows\system directory.
Begin enjoying DVD movies.

Some other things about this program.  I have installed and use this program on Windows 98, however I will assume it works on 95 as well adn I hope to test it on NT 5.0 once I can again use my CD/DVD drives in it.  I do not know if there is a region crack for this program or if it is even neccessary since it didn't prompt for region code, but I don't have any non Region 1 discs to use.  If you have any questions or problems let me know using the address below, I won't promise anything but I will try.

Some other things about this program.  I have installed and used this program on Windows 98, however I will assume it works on 95, it does not currently work with Windows 2000 Pro (however I have heard that the great guys over at QI are worling on this right now). I am still looking for another player that can be used with SCSI DVD-ROM drives and / or Windows 2000. Also as an update you can now buy Xing DVD and Cyberlink's PowerDVD from their web sites.  The Zoran player comes with many video and sound cards, unfortunately it sucks.

One thing about a common error people may see:

This is caused by your video card not supporting the neccessary Overlays at your current resolution and / or color depth.  Try reducing resolution or color depth, also your video card may just not support Overlays.

Hidden option in Software Cinemaster 98
In the registry, under HKLM\Software\Quadrant International, Inc.\Software Cinemaster\0.9\AudioDecoder (just search for "0.9" or "AudioDecoder")
you will find a variable called: "CompressionMode", after you install SC'98.

"CompressionMode" only works on Dolby Digital 5.1 sound tracks
(not on MPEG Dolby Surround (2 channel) tracks).

For me, it was set by default to 3.
To cut a long story short, here is what I found:
CompressionMode:
0 = Good, uncompressed (I tend to think this is the "normal" sound)
1 = Attenuated (weaker volume, no compression)
2 = Amplified (higher volume, no compression)
3 = Compressed
4+ = Attenuated, but less than 1
Mode 3 would be useful if you listen to the movie via powerful speakers, and don't want your neighbours to jump every time a BIG badaboom occurs (the sound volume tends to be relatively uniform, like there is an auto gain control. But explosions are attenuated to a volume that is LOWER than normal speech)

My preference is Mode 2, because it solves the low volume problem of SC, and the sound is not distorted. Besides, if you have a SBLive card and 4 speakers + subwoofer like I do, and you use the "CMSS - Movie Mode" to separate front from rear channels, you will want to avoid Mode 3, because it confuses the channel separation and you get rubbish.

I hope someone can explain to me what is exactly meant by sound compression, how it is done, and what is it used for it ... :) (apart from reducing white noise, which obviously doesn't exist on dolby DVD's at 48KHz... dolby is compressed already, isn't it ?)

By the way, there's also another variable called "UseLFE" which modifies the sound a bit (is it Low Frequency Equaliser or something ??)

"LFE" is "Low Frequency Effect".
DOLBY DIGITAL(same as AC-3) has discrete LFE signal("0.1ch" in AC-3 5.1ch).
Perhaps, when "UseLFE" bit is on,this "LFE" channel is downmix to main L&Rch,and ENJOY more dynamic sounds!  From :Takenori Haga

You're probably right... I did notice an increase in bass frequencies.
However I forgot to mention that, the "CompressionMode" functions only work when you listen to a Dolby Digital (AC3) soundtrack. In particular, it does not affect the sound in any way if you listen to an MPEG (Dolby Surround - 2 channel) track.

Hab

I have played around a bit more with cinemaster 98 sound settings. Here's what I found

- The "CompressionMode" variable in the registry also works for the files from "qipatch.zip".
So if you don't have SC'98 and would like to try audio compression, you can manually add
this variable to your registry (as a DWORD value).

Note: When you change a registry setting, you must stop (not pause) the movie and start it
again for the changes to take effect.

- Compared with the files from QIPATCH.ZIP (i.e. those from ATI DVDPlayer 1.2), the only
files that differ in the decoding engine are:

c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CINEMAST.DLL (same)
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CINMHOOK.DLL (same)
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VDSUP16.DLL (same)
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VDSUP32.DLL (same)
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CINEMSUP.SYS 13891 bytes 27/3/98 -- replaces 13891 bytes 13/7/98 (different contents)
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CINMST32.DLL v0.9.06.1311 653312 bytes 26/8/98 -- replaces v1.0.10.1571 730624 bytes 13/7/98
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DVDPLD32.DLL v1.4.06.0602 230400 bytes 30/7/98 -- replaces v1.4.04.0512 130560 bytes 13/7/98
-- files not in QIPATCH.ZIP:
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MCICINEM.DRV (same)
-- files from 1.03J:
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\qiswcine.cpl 1.0.20.1000 205312bytes 23/8/98 (QI Icon) -- replaces 1.0.20.1000 203776bytes 3/5/98 (ATI icon)

- Notice that the CINMST32.DLL file (the actual software decoding engine) in SC'98 is version
0.9.xx while the one from the ATI 1.2 is v1.0.xx, even though the date is older !! Just to
test, I tried overwriting the SC'98 0.9 version with the 1.0 version, and there seems to
be no difference (it works fine).
However v1.0 (from Qipatch) supports more audio options:
VirtualSurroundDownmix (DWORD)
VirtualSurroundFrontOffset (DWORD)
VirtualSurroundBackOffset (DWORD)
I suppose this should enhance listening with 2 speakers, but I have not succeeded in
doing that. I have confirmed that setting VirtualSurroundDownmix to 1 does change the
sound, but not well: it tends to become mono. I guess the offsets must be adjusted too,
but I don't think it's worth it.

Notice also that the player installed with SC'98 is v1.5.00.1047, while the one on QI's
site is v1.6.00.0007, but here also the date is older!!
There is, however, no noticeable difference in the players.
I also found another hidden option for the player:
In the QI registry key, under "DVDPlayer\1.5" (or 1.6) you can add a variable called
"ColorScheme" (DWORD value). Try setting it to 0, 2, 4 or 6. This changes the color of
the LED display in the player.
If anyone has comments, let's hear them!

New ATI DVD Player v3.00.  Details see on : http://members.xoom.com/virtuamedia/dvd/dvd.html
This player comes with an updated CineMaster decoding engine (v1.0.25.3956). It now incorporates more of the CineMaster's features directly into the player, but the player itself is still a bit buggy. Whatever you do DO NOT try changing the default screen size while a DVD is playing, the player will crash.
Region wise, the updated ATI player works exactly the same as the 1.2 player and DVD Region Selector works like a charm. One thing to remember is, that the installer (at least on my computer) did NOT set the region code or any of the other CineMaster options. Hell, it didn't even set the decoding mode to ATI Hardware Motion Compensation. And of course, as with the previous ATI DVD Player, the CineMaster control panel is invisible, so keep the one you got from a previous CineMaster installation (CineMaster 98 or CineMaster 1.03j).
Since the ATI DVD Player installation program does not set the correct CineMaster setting during installation, i don't even see how you can play any DVD Titles, without having DVD Region Selector or an active CineMaster control panel to first initialize the registry settings (sound mode, decoding mode, deinterlacing, etc...).

Possible solution for ATIDVD 3.1 & image artifacts (by a ) from Discussion
First off, a lot of people have made a lot of *different* valid observations about the Cinemaster decoder engine. With ATIDVD 3.1 reaching a lot of non-ATI owners, it looks like we're seeing what happens when you use an application on hardware it was never intended/tested for!

------
"When I zoom the playback window to full-screen, the image is very blocky. It looks like bilinear filtering has been turned off. Why?"

Cause? I need a few volunteers to help me pinpoint the cause. On my Savage3D, both Cinemaster98 and ATIDVD 3.1 give me horrid unfiltered video at full-screen. But the moment I pop-up a dialog-box or menu, the filtering turns back on. Pretty wierd huh? My Trident985AGP (useless for ATIDVD, very slow) doesn't show this image-quality problem, its filtering is always on. Here's the kicker... filtering turns ON if I pop up *any* dialog box, ATIDVD, Windows, or otherwise! If the dialog covers the "active-play-area" (the DVD-video window), filtering immediately snaps to ON. Once I close the dialog-box, filtering turns OFF.

If ATIDVD gives you the same quirky behavior (covering the play-area with a dialog box momentarily restores filtering), then I might have a POSSIBLE SOLUTION. Search your Win95 registry for the key "AlwaysNeedsColorkey" (under Software Cinemaster\Display), and change the key value to 00000001. The ColorKey is related to Directdraw Overlay Surfaces. Overlay-surfaces are independent hardware windows. Without a color-key, the final image (as seen on your monitor) is rendered with the primary-display (desktop) on bottom, and the overlay on top of the Primary display. The overlay is "always on top."

The color-key, if enabled, controls draw-order (who's on top) on a PER-PIXEL basis. In other words, it functions like a digital "blue-screen." Most of the time, the color-key is part of the primary-surface. as the RAMDAC scans the framebuffer, it scans the primary-surface pixel by pixel. At a given screen coordinate, if a (primary surface) pixel-value = colorkeyvalue, then the overlay (secondary surface) is shown (primary surface is "transparent".) the primary-surface is displayed (primary surface is "opaque.")

(The other arrangement is to put the colorkey in the overlay surface, letting the overlay-surface's content control draw-order. Sega/Nintendo scrolling-fields and sprite-graphics use this implementation.)

I have no idea why the disabling the colorkey would simultaneously shutoff filtering on the overlay. This is your video card's Directdraw driver fault, not ATIDVD's fault.

^^^

Summary of above text : Change the key "AlwaysNeedsColorkey" under "Software Cinemaster\display" to 00000001.

-------------------

"Cinemaster/ATIDVD gives me a lot of video tearing. I see a lot of tearing during horizontal pan shots."

Cause? ATIDVD 3.1 disables "EnforceFlipSync" by default.

Solution? Search your Win95/98 registry for this key, change it to 00000001 (enable)

-------------------
"The intro screens and menus jitter a lot (bounce up and down, oscillating by +/- one pixel.)"

That's what BOB-deinterlacing looks like. To make a long story short, BOB-deinterlacing emulates a TV (interlaced) display on your PC NON-interlaced monitor. Ever watch a live-taped basketball game on TV? Notice how the boundary-markings on the court seem to "swim" with the picture? That's an unavoidable artifact of interlacing, you probably just got used to it and never really paid attention to it. You can read more about BOB/WEAVE deinterlacing at http://www.lanroom.com/dvd or http://www.activewin.com/dvd

Solution: Well, if you really hate BOB-deinterlacing, you can force Cinemaster to always use WEAVE deinterlacing. Use the Cinemaster control panel or DVD Region selector and pick "FORCE WEAVE"

WEAVE merges two (temporally) adjacent picture fields, to form a single frame. The screen is updated on a per-frame (and not per-field) basis. This will eliminate jitter, but introduces "weave artifacts" which look like horizontal hair-lines anywhere there is a lot of motion between fields.
Most *film* content (24fps) is weave-compatible (i.e. no hair-line artifacting.) A few early DVD-movies are not weave-compatible, and will exhibit hair-line artifacting.

-----
There are a zillion other issues, audio and video.

I'm not too familiar with the audio issues, as I don't have a *real* soundcard (still chugging along with a Yamaha ISA!), so I'll let others fill that in.

cinemaster engine 1.0.32 problems solved
by panayiotis palmiris  posted 7/18/99 6:01:26 PM
If you have problems with the ATI3.1 softdvd and the cinemaster engine 1.0.32 then do the following:
1. Unistall the ATI3.1 softDVD
2. Install the QIplayer1.6
3. Install the DVD.zip in c:\windows\system
4. Install the Cinmst32.zip in c:\windows\system

Restart
Now you can enjoy the Cinemaster 1.0.32 engine

As you noticed now you only use the QI player instead of the ATI3.1 player.

I have also tested the SonicVortex2 soundcard for AC3 audio and unexpectedly it worked. This is a breakthrough. With the ATI3.1 softDvd it failed whereas in this configuration the ac3 audio via the s/pdif works. Only if anybody had told me this I would not had bought the soundblaster live retail.

Software Cinemaster DVD decoding Engine v1.0.28.5034 (ATI 3.1)
D/l: : cinemaster1028.zip
This is Software Cinemaster DVD Decoding engine v1.0.28.5034 extracted from ATI DVD 3.1 package.  It will save you the time to download that package.
Enclosed:
SC1028.ZIP   New: Software Cinemaster decoding engine v1.0.28.5034 (CINMST32.DLL)
New: Software Cinemaster DVD navigation dll v1.4.11.0833 (DVDPLD32.DLL)
Other files that are identical to v1027 files
(NB: The CPL control panel file is functional)

SC1027-b.ZIP Software Cinemaster decoding engine v1.0.27.4247 (CINMST32.DLL)
Software Cinemaster DVD navigation dll v1.4.10.0805 (DVDPLD32.DLL)
(This zip provided for emeregency only.. read below)
To Install:
- Install DirectX6 or later (if not already installed)
- Install DirectX Media 6 or later (if not already installed)
- Unzip the SC1028.ZIP file in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder
- Install QI Player v1.6, which you can get from QI's site (if not already installed)
That's all.

If the QI player v1.6 crashes when you first run it, and you have run software cinemaster successfully on your hardware before, you can try a couple of things:
1) Download the full ATI 3.1 package and see if installing that solves the problem.
2) Revert back to v1027 of software cinemaster, by extracting the file CINMST32.DLL
from the SC1027-b.zip file, into your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.  (You can keep the
DVDPLD32.DLL file from 1028, as it has a few more navigation features).
Enjoy!

Software Cinemaster DVD decoding Engine v1.0.27.4247 (ATI 3.0)
This is Software Cinemaster v1.0.27 engine files, extracted from ATIDVD3.0 final.  Latest know version as of Feb. 99.  Makes it unnecessary to download the whole ATI3.0 file, especially if it won't install on your system.
(Requires the QI Player and DirectX6)." Cinemaster1027.zip
To make the file as small as possible, WinRAR was used to compress the archive into a self-extracting EXE file included.
Run the Self-extracting exe, and extract into a temp folder.
Note: The version number refers to the Software Cinemaster decoding engine iself,   (CINMST32.DLL) not a player program's version. This is the latest version as   of Feb 99.

Software Cinemaster is probably the best DVD player available today. Both among software-only and hardware-assisted players.  It is highly optimised, and requires a standard mainstream PC.  Your PC may not fit this description, so check out these requirements first:
The only 2 hardware requirements:  CPU and Graphics Card
- CPU must be a Pentium 2 or CeleronA.  266MHz should be sufficient if you have the
right graphics card (it runs perfectly on my Celeron 300A).  AMD K6-2 CPUs suffer,
and will require >350MHz, if any.
- Your graphics card must have:
  1) "Overlay" support (otherwise, it won't work at all)
  2) MORE than 4MB of ram on the card (people with 4MB have problems, *IF* it runs)
  3) Better be an AGP card (rules out some motherboards and CPUs too)
- You must install DirectX 6 or later
If you have all of the above, you will experience the smoothest, undistorted playback you can get today.
(If you buy a new graphics card, and your TV/Hifi is not far from your PC, think about getting one with TV-out. Some people prefer the TV image.)
If you do not get smooth playback, one of the above requirements is not met.
Get the QI DVD Player
To install this latest version of Software Cinemaster, you need these files, plus the QI Player v1.6.
The QI Player may not be very pretty, but it has the most options. You'll probably be watching the movie anyway, not the player console.
You can download the QI Player from Quadrant International's web site.      http://www.qi.com/software/files2.html
Go to the "Cinemaster C" (not S) sections, and get the player files (2 files) for your version of windows (95/98).  DO NOT GET THE "DRIVER" FILE (it's only for their "Cinemaster C" decoder **card**.)  The software cinemaster "drivers" are here in this zip file.
Installation .  To install follow these steps:
0) First make sure you have DirectX6 installed.
1) Unzip the SC1027.zip file into your windows\system folder (this is the driver,    or decoding engine).
2) Install the QI player you downloaded (it needs this driver)
3) Run the "Software Cinemaster" applet in the windows Control Panel:
a) Check the "Expert Mode" check box
b) Select your region in the Region Settings tab (depending on where you bought       your DVDs from)
c) Make sure the "Hardware Motion Compensation (ATI)" option is NOT selected on       the "Video" tab (unless      you have an ATI graphics card with hardware motion      compensation - look in your manual or ask ATI if you
don't know).  For all other       cards, choose "Full CPU" instead. (Even if you have an ATI card, try "Full CPU")
Choose "Force Weave" in the list below that.
4) Put a DVD in the drive and run the QI Player.
Note: When you run the player the first time, it only opens the viewing window.       Right-click on the window and click on "Panel Control" to display the playback       controls.
Note: While reading the readme and help files, bear in mind that many things in there       apply only to owners of the Cinemaster CARD .
Contents   The enclosed SC1027.zip file contains:
**The Software Cinemaster DVD decoding engine v1.0.27.4247 (latest version as of Feb 99)
   Cinmst32.dll   main engine file
   Dvdpld32.dll   DVD navigation support
   Cinemast.dll
   Cinemsup.sys
   Cinmhook.dll
   Vdsup16.dll
   Vdsup32.dll
   Qiswcine.cpl   control panel applet
The following are **optional**. They are not needed by the QI DVD Player.
**Software Cinemaster Filters for DirectShow (Media Player 2 or 6: MPlayer2.exe)
(Note: These filters require the above engine files)
Qidvdf.ax      DVD playback filter (.vob files)
   Qimpg2f.ax     MPEG2 playback filter (.??? files)
RegAXFil.bat   A batch file you should run, which registers the 2 directshow filters
so that Media Player 2 or 6, (or any other Directshow compatible player)
can use them to play VOB and MPEG2 files
VOBExt.reg     Optional file, makes it easier to select .VOB files from Media Player's
(MPlayer2.exe) "Open File" dialog. You can right-click it, and select
                  "Merge".
(Note: Media Player 6 has recently become available on the Windows 98 update site.)
Also Optional
**Software Cinemaster MCI driver
Mcicinem.drv   useful for older MCI applications like the old Media Player (MPlayer.exe)
Enables Mplayer.exe to play .VOB files.
If you wish to install this driver properly, add the following to your WIN.INI and  SYSTEM.INI:
;These changes enable the "old" original Media Player (Mplayer.exe)
;  to play VOB files, even though the extension VOB is not offered as an option.
;  It plays them well (with sound, optional subtitles ("Sub Picture"), and the proper
;  aspect ratio, but it can only play non encrypted files).
;  I don't think you can change the language for speech and subtitles, though.
;  This driver (MciCinem.drv) could also be used by some games to play MPEG2 files.

Hidden Software Cinemaster Sound Options for Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) soundtracks
Software Cinemaster has an option called "CompressionMode" which can greatly enhance the
sound quality of AC3 soundtracks (only).
The effect on sound is as follows:
 CompressionMode          Effect
      0                Normal sound
      1                Atttenuated sound
      2                Amplified sound
      3                Compressed sound
Setting this value to 3 will increase the volume globally and is quite nice if you must
listen to movies at a "controlled" volume (don't want to disturb the neighbours). It acts
like an automatic gain control, enhancing soft sounds, and suppressing loud explosions.
Otherwise the 2 (or 0) setting will give excellent results.
Another hidden option, called "UseLFE", can be set to either 0 or 1.
When set to 1, the Low Frequency Effect channel in Dolby 5.1 tracks will be processed.
Otherwise it will not.  LFE contains very deep rumbling sounds which can greatly enhance
your viewing experience, provided your speakers can take them!  Don't push too hard on
the volume with this effect turned on.. ;)
To manipulate these 2 settings, 4 other files are provided:

  AC3Amplified.reg     sets CompressionMode = 2
  AC3Compressed.reg    sets CompressionMode = 3
  AC3UseLFE.reg        sets UseLFE = 1
  AC3NoUseLFE.reg      sets UseLFE = 0

You can place these 4 files on your desktop, for easy access.  To run them, either
double-click them, or if that doesn't work, right-click and choose "Merge".

Whenever you change a registry setting, either by using the control panel, or by
running one of these files, you must either exit the player and run it again, or
at least STOP the movie and start it again (not just pause it) for the changes to
take effect.
Finally, here are some nice tools to have:

DVDRegion selector
(from  http://www.activewin.com/dvd/dvdinfomatrix/)
Not only does it allow you to change the CompressionMode setting for Cinemaster, it also allows you to change regions for several popular software players, including Software Cinemaster.

CLTEST.EXE
(From PowerDVD 1.3 package)
Put a DVD disk in the drive, wait for the light to go off, and run this applet.
It creates a file in C:\CLTEST.TXT.
Besides a whole lot of info regarding your hardware and drivers, at the end of the
file you will find info about your DVD movie, namely: Whether the movie is copy protected
(i.e. CSS scrambled) and what region limitations (if any) there are to play that movie.
I have noticed that a lot of DVD's that have a region printed on the back of the case
are in reality region free, or they support more than just one region.

DDTESTER.EXE  (requires TESTIMG.YUV)
(From PowerDVD 1.3 package)
This little test applet will tell you if your graphics card supports overlay, and will
indicate its speed in fps.  If you don't see the word "Overlay" in the test results or
Device Caps, then you better get another graphics card.
One other way to find out if your graphics card supports Overlay is to use Media Player 2
or 6 (MPLAYER2.EXE). Load in an AVI file, then click Properties and find the "DirectDraw"
tab under Video Renderer. If you see "DDCAPS_OVERLAY" in the list, you have it.

OSD and MultiRes
Go to Entech's site: http://www.entechtaiwan.com , and get these 2 utilities.
You might also want to get HZTool from  http://hem.passagen.se/doxx/
These are utilities that help you adjust your display settings.
OSD will measure and display your screen's (not the movie's) vertical refresh rate.
MultiRes is similar to the Win95 QuickRes PowerTool (which is now built into Win98),
but MultiRes allows you to switch refresh rates from its menu too.
HZTool is much more powerful in terms of refresh rates, but it may not work with
your graphics card.
If you watch an NTSC movie (from film), use refresh rates of 60, 90 or 120Hz.
If PAL, use 75, 100 or 125Hz.
This could avoid some "tearing" effects you may otherwise get (although Cinemaster
has an option called "EnforceFlipSync" which will sync to the screen's vertical
frequency. Don't fiddle with the registry unless you know what you're doing).
For the curious, this version of the software cinemaster decoding engine was included in
the ATIDVD 3.0 final package.

The Software Cinemaster Registry entry is at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Quadrant International, Inc.\Software Cinemaster\0.9\

FAQ     (from Discussion)
Cinemaster to play .VOB/.MPEG files?
Q:Does anyone know how to get Software Cinemaster to play .VOB or MPEG files? The player can only work with DVD discs, it seems.
A:Windows Media Player 2 (MPLAYER2.EXE) can play vob files using cinemaster engine, if it has been installed properly. The ATI 3.1/3.0 Player can also play files. BUT.. none of these will play VOB files that are scrambled (come from a protected DVD disk). A protected movie can only be played in disk mode.
Q: How do I get Media player to use Cinemaster? What is the MCI driver for Cinemaster? Thanks.
A: If you installed ATI 3.1 it would have registered the Cinemaster DirectShow Filter (QIDVDF.AX).
If not, register it by running: regsvr32 c:\windows\system\qidvdf.ax
If you installed the QI Player (without engine) and then installed the engine by unzipping the dlls into the Windows\System folder, then you need to register the file manually.
Then run Media Player and open a VOB file. (hint: type "*.*" in the file name to be able to see VOB files in the Open File dialog.)
Unfortunately, even though the vob file may run, I have not been able to tell with certainty which DVD engine is being used by Media Player. This is because if you install several DVD players, there can be several DVD DirectShow Filters installed. The only way I know is when I play the AC3Test.vob file and I hear the LFE (low frequency channel), then I know it is cinemaster, because other players (that I have) can't decode the LFE channel.
 Difference between Cinemaster 1.6 and 98 ?
Software Cinemaster = A decoding Engine + A user interface ("player")
From oldest to newest decoding engine:
Software CInemaster 1.0 3j (engine v0.9.04)
Cinemaster 98 (engine v0.9.06)
ATIDVD1.2 (engine v1.0.10)
ATIDVD3.0 (engine v1.0.27)
ATIDVD3.1 (engine v1.0.28)
Yes, you can install a newer decoding engine over Cinemaster98, 1.03j (both have the QI Player v1.5), or over the QI Player v1.6. You could also install a newer engine over any ATI package.
As to "why they are different"... all I can say is: that's life! :)
Q: what is Cinemaster 3.0ATI?
I went to qi's homepage and downloaded this:
Windows 98 Install Disk 1 of 2: c-disk1.zip.    September 22, 1998.   1.6.00.0007.   1,261 KB
This is the current release of Install Disk 1 of 2 for DVD Player for CineMaster 1.2 for Windows 98.
Windows 98 Install Disk 2 of 2 : c-disk2.zip.  September 22, 1998.  1.6.00.0007.  884 KB
This is the current release of Install Disk 2 of 2 for DVD Player for CineMaster 1.2 for Windows 98.

A: What you downloaded is the QI Player v1.6
Keep it, it's the best for Software Cinemaster, and the most recent version of the player.
However, this is only the Player. It needs the Software Cinemaster decoding engine.
You can install the latest version of Software Cinemaster by installing ATI3.0
After that, install the QI 1.6 Player.
You'll be able to then use either the ATI Player v3.0, or the QI 1.6 Player (which has a bit more options).

I did just that after reading up more and going to additional links on this site....i downloaded and installed the ATI 3.0 player and then the QI 1.6, replaced the "qiswcine" file with the original QI 1.6. Wow, all my problems are fixed, and Cinemaster is by far the BEST software decoder.

Finally a software Cinemaster 3.0 decoder that works on my system. 80)
First install the QI player V1.6 then install Cinemaster 3.0ATI add the 1.03j contro panel and Hey presto.... a working system with a great (stable) front end.

A:  Please don't call it Cinemaster 3.0
The version of Software Cinemaster in the ATI3.0 package is 1.0.27.4247.
The "3.0" is the version of the ATI player in that package.
And yes, I agree that v1.0.27 of Software Cinemaster is still smoother, although I have a feeling it is starting to lose some "brilliance" (or "sharpness") as cost for the fluidity.
This version also has some new hidden sound options.
One thing to beware if you have Cinemaster 98 (QI Player v1.5) installed, is that ATI3.0 will silently delete the Cinemaster 98 directory (the QI 1.5 player).
You can always re-install the QI 1.6 player after that.

Cinemaster on non-ATI  cards:
Go to control panel, and select the "software cinemaster" panel.
Select the video tab and switch desired format from "hardware motion compesation" to "full quality".
I got a terrible quality at first, but when you change Deinterlacing to "force weave" (don't forget the set export mode first), i got a very good quality...

Q:  I have a celery464a, STBv4400, Creative 5x dvd and i just got PowerDVD 1.22 and Cinemaster 1.6 installed.
i have been reading the posts here and you guyz say Cinemaster is the better player. On my system Cinemaster's playback is jittery and PowerDVD is almost perfect. I saw the control panel applet for cinemaster and played with a few settings, but nothing improved playback quality. Can any of you give me some suggestions?

A: Cinemaster simulates BOB de-interlacing ... which is probably the source of jitter on your DVD movies. You can go to the Cinemaster control panel applet and turn on "Expert user" (this will give you access to the "advanced settings.")
Then go to the video tab, and change DEINTERLACING to "FORCE WEAVE"

I completely disagree with that - weave causes extreme edge artifacts although at first it appears less 'flickery' until...
Bob is much better *as long as* you use a mode that is a step-up from the field rate, e.g. 120hz will work for everything.
Besides, the guy has a Celeron going at over 450mhz - far more horsepower than Cinemaster needs for smooth playback.
I have two 450mhz Celerons, one with a TNT and one with a G200, both of which run Cinemaster in full CPU mode with excellent quality and I use BOB with 120hz screen modes which is far better than weave when viewing a DVD containing TV/video with 30fields/sec.
He should be looking at his video card and/or its drivers.. he has more than enough raw horsepower for a full weave or bob mode.
All versions of PowerDVD I've looked at have poorer picture quality than a correctly configured Cinemaster and exhibits 'shudder' occassionally during high bit rates and Cinemaster does is perfect on the same systems.

I agree with you.
However, my monitor's max vertical frequency is 120Hz, I wouldn't want to make it work at that frequency all the time, as it will probably shorten its life. Besides, for 50Hz PAL movies, the frequency you would advise is 100Hz.Like you said, BOB is good for TV/video.
For DVD's made from Film, I find Weave is the better choice for a smoother image. With BOB, lines tend to "bob" up and down unnecessarily

Like you said, BOB is good for TV/video. For DVD's made from Film, I find Weave is the better choice for a smoother image. With BOB, lines tend to "bob" up and down unnecessarily.
Films are 24 frames/sec and usually played back at a multiple, e.g. 3, yielding 72 fps. Therefore you want your screen resolution to be a multiple of 24 for best results during film. A lot of people use 72hz if you can't manage 120, but 120hz is very convenient because it is also a multiple of 60hz interlaced NTSC video so you have one refresh rate to fit all.
BOB only really works at its best if you are using a refresh rate that is a multiple of it (60, 120hz, ..). Its a shame your monitor can't do 120 (u sure even at 800x600?) because the bobbing up and down will disappear and you should get an excellent picture - better than weave mode for interlaced parts definitely.
I personally find that weave introduces 'furry edges' I find unacceptible and I find a 120hz refresh with bob mode gives excellent film quality and superior interlaced quality.
By the way, a program called "PowerStrip" comes in very handy here; you can 'associate' programs with custom screen modes (refresh rates and res) so you can for example, launch Cinemaster in 1024x768x16@120hz with a single click.

Although film is 24Hz, on DVD it's PAL (50Hz) or NTSC (60Hz). What I meant was that the even and odd frames on DVD come from the exact same film image, so there should not be any motion artifacts there, except once every 25 film frames (since 50 or 60 is not an exact multiple of 24), i.e. once per second. However, I tried hard to find a difference between 75, 85, 100 and 120Hz. I just don't see any on my system. The image is equally good all the time.
In some images, like closing credits, the difference can be clearly seen. BOB really bobs, but the letters have better forms. Weave makes the letters smooth and steady, but sometimes parts of them are missing. On images with thin horizontal line patterns, Weave is also smoother than Bob. Weave could be "mixing" the 2 frames and producing "artifacts" like you say, but IMO, the result is only seen on very fine details like the ones I mentioned above. Otherwise, I don't see any furry edges on my system (perhaps I need to get some eye glasses!!)

1.6 is just a new player interface (user GUI), not a real upgrade to the decoding engine.
1.6 looks and behaves very much like 1.5 (the player in Cinemaster98).

From now on, whenever you put in a DVD, the QI Player will auto-run and play it. You don't have to press a single button!
QI Player 1.6 turns the mouse pointer off too, if you haven't noticed.
Also, if you exist the player while it is in Full screen mode, it will start next time in full screen
