Creative 5x drive  (from http://www.visualdomain.net/ )
Creative has started shipping the Encore DXR2 set with a different model 5 speed Panasonic drive, the DVD5241E. The firmwares available for download on this site can NOT be used with this drive! It is not necessary to update the firmware of this drive, because it has no region protection

I have tested the firmware update (revision 1.30) for the Creative DVD5240E and it's working perfectly and it's ofcourse regionfree. So if you have a Creative 5 speed drive, this is the firmware to go for.

I've just received the 'official' firmware update for the Creative 5x drive (5240E). I haven't tested it myself yet, but it should also be region free. For usage of this file, see info below

Some people seem to have problems with the e61c (UDMA) version of the firmware. It's seems that when you first flash the c61c version and after that flash the e61c version it may work properly.

A lot of people don't understand how to upgrade the firmware for their 5x drive. To make things easier, I have made a new batch file ('upgrade.bat') which is included in the zipfiles.
How to use the firmware upgrades:
Unzip the firmware file to a directory, f.i. c:\firmware
Reboot your computer.
Press (and hold) F8 while booting to get the Windows boot menu.
Choose 'Command prompt only'.
Change directory to where you unzipped the firmware file (f.i. c:\firmware).
Type 'upgrade' and follow onscreen instructions.
When the program is ready and the DOS prompt is back (it should take around 40 seconds to upgrade the firmware), reboot your computer.
Your drive will report itself as 'MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8583' and will be regionfree.
You still need the Remote Selector to switch the region code of the Dxr2 card ofcourse ...

I have installed the firmware yesterday and it works perfectly! Several people have also mailed me and confirmed this. One small note, the default setting of the flash program assumes that your drive is connected as master on the secondairy IDE port.
There are three versions of the firmware available (all of them are region free):
Version c54a (98.10.15)
Version c61c (98.11.26)
Version e61c (98.11.26) Ultra DMA
And I warn you again: Use these firmware updates AT YOUR OWN RISK !!! .

Here is a firmware update for the Panasonic SR-8583 drive. I haven't had the possibility to test it myself, but others say that it works and that it makes your Creative 5x drive regionfree! Use it at your own risk!
I will test it myself tonight and will post the results tomorrow.

I've updated the drive info program. It seemed that some drives have region protection, but report that all regions can be played. In this case the program reported region code 8. This is fixed now.

Creative DVD Remote Selector V1.6 (from http://www.visualdomain.net/ )

Current version: 1.73 :
What's new in V1.73
Native support added for the X10 MouseRemote.
Region support added for the Chromatic Research Mpact2 (only with Mediaware 98).
Remote support added for the Entertainment Center.

What's new in V1.72
LCD Display support added for the following players:
WinAmp (Playmode, Chapter and Time).
RealMagic DVD Station (Playmode, Title, Chapter and Time).
For this option to work properly, the DVD Station control window must be visible and topmost. Remote Selector will automatically make the control window visible and topmost if display support is enabled.
This option does not work if you play full screen on the PC monitor, since the control window is not visible.
Support added for RealMagic remote control.

What's new in V1.71
Support added for the latest Creative Dxr3 player software (V4.20):
MacroVision disabling  support, Remote support for menu functions.
Automatic region change option added: This option only works when the 'Auto insert notification' option of  the DVD drive is enabled.
Support added for Logitech AST remote control.
What's new in V1.7:
Region, TV Framerate and MacroVision support added for the DXR2 under Windows NT and Windows 98SE/2000 with WDM driver.
TV Mode and MacroVision support added for the DXR3.
Preliminary support added for HD44780 based LCD displays, connected to the parallel port.
Only works with Windows 95 and 98.
Only the following players are supported:
Creative DVD player V3.x/V4.x (title, chapter and time).
Creative PlayCenter (chapter and time).
Improved support for native supported remotes:
Shutdown now works correctly.
Key reassign confirmation window appeared behind the mainwindow, this is fixed now.
Improved support for the RealMagic Hollywood+:
Remote support for the DVD Station only worked with English Windows. It should now work with all languages.
Support added for version 1.7 of the software/drivers.
Improved Framerate support for the DXR2:
Support added for the latest version of the DXR2 software/drivers.
Setting 'Disc Type' now completely restores original state. This should solve problems with some German DVD's and with non standard DVD resolution movies. If you have used a previous version of the Remote Selector, you must reinstall the player software first for this function to work properly.
All additional files are now attached to the executable as resources, so the program now only consists of one file.

Region Selector  (from http://www.inmatrix.com )
DVD Region Selector v3.75 available now  http://www.kesher-computers.co.il/dvd
DVD Hack Forum: http://www.messagezone.com/message.asp?BoardName=103582

--- What's new in v3.75:

* With the help of a Genie user by the name of "Dan Jackson", I was able
to write code that recreates the Windows 98 Special Edition internal
region code. It also resets it's region counter back to 1 change
remaining. So you can reset the region as many times as required.

* Furthermore, Direct support for changing the Windows 98 Second/Millennium
Edition region code has been enabled. This makes playback using players
that rely on the internal windows code much easier to accomplish.

* New option to automatically set the Windows 98 SE / ME region code on the
"Auto Region" panel.

* Fixed the windows DVD-Run-on-insert feature so that it will not give
that odd message under Windows Millennium Edition when inserting a disc
and no program is selected to auto-run.

* MGI SoftDVD MAX region-reset feature has been confirmed to work
with the latest version (v3.6.0002 with Dolby Headphone support).
This will only work in combination of the Windows internal region
code, the Windows code must be set, and the SoftDVD code must be
reset, then it'll work like a charm.

* Will now detect Windows 2000 region keys, thanks to all the people
who've sent me sample keys so I can implement this feature.

* Can now export and erase the Windows 2000 region key.

* Removed the ability to edit the region key within DVD Genie.
This feature was not really practical due to the changes Microsoft
did to the design of the key since it's original inception in
Windows 98.

* The DVD Genie configuration entries have been moved to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER for Windows 2000 compatibility.

* Some of the more important pop-up messages can now be translated.

It's a pretty simple one actually.
Basically all you have to do is: once you've changed regions 6 times, delete the file "C:/WINDOWS/_setInfo.dll" and then you get 6 more changes!!! Simple huh???

CINEMASTER-S 2.3 hardware region patch by Thaddaeus Kong.
CREGION is a program I wrote for my region 4 Cinemaster-S 2.3 hardware card. Basically it is a patch to allow my region 4 Cinemaster card to play DVDs from other regions. I am assuming that your Cinemaster-S card is set up
correctly and is working.

Macrovision:
what is it ? and how disable? http://www.repairfaq.org/filipg/LINK/F_MacroVision.html
Someone asked  where to find the macrovision code in the ATI drivers, so it was in the 'atitvo32.dll'.
This person was then to try looking at how to disable it, but he first tried to take a shortcut and just removed the dll from the windows system directory.  And amazingly enough, it seems to work.
He used an ATI Fury card, but this should work for all ATI cards with T.V. out.
If anything is melfunctioning, just return the DLL to the system directory.
Asus  V3400 macrovision
by KakukZ  posted 5/17/99 8:52:14 PM
More on macrovision: Both the new V3400 drivers (2.16 and 2.17) AND Cinemaster decoding engine (1.0.29) is supporting macrovision, so you have two options:
1. Use new cinmaster engine but with the OLD V3400 drivers.
2. Use 1.0.28 Cinemaster decoding engine with the new drivers.
Both method will overcome macrovision protection, but have to find a way to use 2.17 drivers and 1.0.29 engine. Any ideas?
Regards,
KakukZ
There is 2 protections with the ATI 3.1 Player and an ATI 128.
The first is in the cinemaster decoding engine (1027 & 1029) and the second in the atitvo32.dll.
You must use the 1028 version of cinemaster decoding engine (because macrovision is disable in this package.) and delete the atitvo32.dll (\windows\system).
And it works....i've tested it yesterday.
nb : if you disable only one protection...macrovision will still enabled....
This program will enable/disable the ATI's T.V. -> Out MacroVision encoding (when possible).
If you do not see the macrovision button as enabled, then you most likely need a newer driver, or your
specific ATI card is not supported.
This program is ONLY for ATI cards and will not work for anything else.
For any questions, mail dvdinf@hotmail.com
The author of ATI Macrovision remover says his program sucks and doesn't work with any of the new drivers, so don't bother keeping it online
TweakSD 0.5. This is a region selector for Matrox DVD AddOn, which bundles with
 Zoran SoftDVD 2.523_5.02 Matrox.
TVTool v.3.0 - there is a new version of TVTool. If you live in a country where NTSC is used you will be
glad to hear that the new version includes support for NTSC. This works only at 640x480, but the image
quality on TV is much better than I expected. Strictly speaking you get a remarkable quality when playing back
DVDs for example. Just try it! There are also a few other new features like turning off Macrovision.
 Works on all TNT (1/2) cards with BT869 for Win95/98. e.g. Viper 550, Velocity 4400, Leadtek S320, Erazor 3,
